Client Case Study Andi Fairbanks - When I Grow Up Um, do you know that Ive coached hundreds of women since I started offering dream career guidance in 2008? And that these women are freakin rock stars, leaving soul-sucking jobs and traveling the world and launching creative, grown-up businesses and simply doing work that fits their lifestyle goals? Well ya do now and youll hear their stories firsthand in my Client Case Studies series! Andi Fairbanks was one of my classmates in musical theater at NYU, and we worked together in 2009. We bartered coaching sessions for karate lessons back then! Shes the best. Why did you decide to work with a creative career coach? I found myself in a similar situation to Michelles before she made the switch to coaching. I was trying to be an actress, I had wonderful training, but I was spending more of my time working day jobs and feeling bad about myself for not making a living as an actress than actually working. I had a lot of anxiety and a lot of doubt that I could keep my spirits up for another 10 years of doing what I was doing. What were you doing work-wise when we started our sessions? I was teaching martial arts and doing some office work at the school and halfheartedly auditioning. What was your biggest takeaway from our work together? My favorite Michelle lesson was to do something every day that moves me forward towards my life/career goals. It could be reading for 10 minutes, it could be making a list, it could be taking a class just something that connects me to why Im doing all of the supporting non-dream work. Was there anything else you tried to do as a career between the time we stopped our program and what you do for work now? If so, how did it inform your current career? I fall into the multipotentialite category, and I have done several thingsand Im still working on getting to that perfect fit. I see these stepping stones differently now, though: I have something to learn or an opportunity from each job Ive had. Ive had flexibility to train and coach runners. Ive gotten paid to write. Ive had my masters degree in adult education paid for. Ive had paid vacation time to use to connect with people I find inspiring while doing things that challenge me and move me forward. Not every second of the day is fulfilling and motivating, but every day has something to offer. What would you tell someone now that was in your shoes when we first started working together? Whats your best tip to allow them to make a grown-up living doing what they love? Let your expectations ebb and flow. You might pick a direction and it might not be right for you, but the fact that youre opening yourself up to try is just one step closer to finding the right thing. Also, be open to there being many right things along the way. Sometimes you have to say yes to the money job and find ways to craft it. Ebb/Flow, Give/Take. Whats on the horizon for your career? I am currently preparing to take the tests I need to get my teaching certificate, and I am working with a frientor (Michelles note: I love Andis made-up word for friend mentor!) of mine as a co-host on her monthly running podcast and as an ambassador for her online running program. Im envisioning a life in which I can continue to ebb and flow with family, educating/coaching, and using what I have come to appreciate as my ability to creatively support and promote ideas I love. Id like to write more, Id like to coach again, and Id like to play more at work these are all things Ill be looking for ways to do in the next 5 years. I have learned that I am not an entrepreneur, but I have a knack for being the bridge between the entrepreneur and the audience. Im a work in progress for life! Resume Bullet Points Vs. Paragraphs Spread the loveA common question job seekers have is whether to use bullets points or paragraphs on a resume. The answer is that a resume should always be written in bullet points and not paragraphs.Why?A hiring manager only spends a few seconds looking at your resume so you want to ensure its easy to read and digest.A resume in paragraphs makes it too text heavy. It could be difficult to capture the attention of a hiring manager this way. Many hiring managers are also quick to dismiss a resume thatâs difficult to read.Keep your resume in short and concise bullet points and use quantifiable accomplishments (numbers) wherever possible.Here is an example of a paragraph on a resume:I was instrumental in the growth of XYZ where I applied my vast marketing knowledge to grow sales and improve usability. I improved overall sales by 9% without increasing the marketing budget. I did this through A/B testing different landing pages and optimizing our paid advertisements. Changes in the lan ding pages were also instrumental to the increase in the overall conversion rate by 13%. I was also successful in securing press in high quality publications which saw an additional 300,000 website visitors. Now lets put this into bullet points which convey the same information more concisely:Increased sales by 9% without increasing the marketing budget through paid advertisements and conversion optimization. Optimized paid advertisements and A/B tested landing pages which resulted in a 13% increase in the overall conversion rate. Secured press in high quality publications which resulted in 300,000 website visitors within 3 months. Collaborated with different departments to improve the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns. Which one was easier to read?Obviously, the bullet points are more reader friendly. Always use bullet points instead of paragraphs.Can I combine both bullet points and paragraphs?You can, but only where you have a lot of relevant and useful information. I n this case, itâs better to do a small paragraph of 3 -4 sentences and then bullet points. You donât want to go over 6 bullet points for a specific position, so including a small paragraph will help you trim it down.This leads us to some tips to keep in mind with your resume bullet points.3 Tips for Your Resume Bullet PointsUse 4-6 Bullet PointsEach position should have 4-6 bullet points listed. If you have a lot of information, then you could use a couple of sentences to open it up and then list bullet points underneath.The positions that are old or irrelevant and towards the end of your resume can be cut down to 2-3 bullet points. Always make an effort to word your old experience in a way that shows relevancy to the position youre targeting.Start with a Strong Power VerbAlthough not always possible, you should try to start each bullet point off with an attention-grabbing action verb.For example; Managed, Trained, Executed, Reduced, Improved.You can check out our post on some 1 01 awesome power verbs to use on a resume.Make the First Bullet the BestThe first bullet point of each position should be the best. You want to capture the attention of the hiring manager with a strong start.Use numbers and power verbs wherever possible, especially for the first bullet point.Just to recap, use bullet points instead of paragraphs on your resume as its more reader friendly and easy for a hiring manager to skim through. As an executive recruiter, Im often asked about resumes, but the titelseite letter itself has a very different function and value for job seekers. If youve been asking yourself, Should I write a cover letter? my answer is a resounding YES. That said, how you build and deliver your cover letter is vital to its usefulness and to your success.What if my cover letter reads a lot like my resume?Too often cover letters are restatements of a resume, which is a problem. If your cover letter is too long and detailed, a prospective employer wont bother reading your resume. The cover letter is useful only if it provides an introduction to a person. Its your chance to convey your understanding of the companys needs and to build anticipation about you as a candidate.What do I include in my cover letter?Try to pique a potential employers curiosity by refraining from answering every question but providing enough information to encourage further interest. The cover letter should include an introduction of yourself, a couple of key points that differentiate you from your peers, and a request for an interview.How important is a cover letter?Compared to the resumes focus on skills and technical experience, the cover letter offers an opportunity to convey something of your personality. For many employers, the fit of a candidate into the workplace culture can be more important than the particular skill set, as long as the individual meets job qualifications and has a good work history.How long should my cover letter be?More words are not necessarily better. You want to grab peoples attentionnot risk losing it by asking them to read a lengthy letter. While the actual length may vary according to the span of your career or experience, I recommend aiming for half of a page and no more than two-thirds of a page (8-15 sentences). The cover letter should be concise and briefnot to mention grammatically corrector its going to hurt your candidacy.Because most people think they write well, they may not pay as much attention as they should to the drafting process. Just as its good to have several people assess your resume before sending it out, you should apply the same rigorous review to your cover letter. Grammatical errors, wordiness, and generally poor composition will be a hindrance, not a help, to your job prospects.Who will read my cover letter?You may never know who will see it. Even if you are applying to a large company with an HR department that screens job applicants, you should always presume that your cover letter might be forwarded to a CFO, Vice President or Senior-level person. So you need to gear your letter to both HR and the individual making the hiring decision. In other words, make sure your cover letter is appropriate for all intended audiences, dont make it too te chnical, and err on the side of formality.What if I dont need a cover letter?Even if you are engaging a recruiter or using a third cocktailparty in your job search that may deal exclusively with resumes, a cover letter is worthwhile for preparing you for further steps in your job search process. And in cases where you are using an email as your only introduction to your resume, make sure your email is as polished as a cover letter would beit can make all the difference.So are cover letters important?
